Strokes normally damage only one side of the brain. Because the nerves in the brain intersect from one side of the body to the other, symptoms appear on the opposite side of the body from where the brain is impaired(eg. if the stroke occurred in the right side of the brain, symptoms appear on the left side bodies, and vice versa).
