After the carbohydrate meal, the blood concentration of glucose increases. This stimulates the pancreas to release insulin which has several metabolic effects on glucose metabolism (on other macronutrients too). Increased insulin concentration increases the rate of glucose catabolism through glycolysis. It also stimulates the storing of glucose through glycogenesis. The major effect of insulin can be seen as stimulation of glucose receptor transportation from cytosol vesicles to the cell membranes, allowing the glucose to enter the insulin-dependent cells.
