Which groups would benefit from repealing the high tariffs known as the Corn Laws? Why?
Solutions
VerifiedThe Corn Laws was a law on the taxation of foreign competitors, in order to protect the local economy. However, in the early 19th century, free traders wanted to abolish these measures. They believed that the abolition of customs duties would increase the prosperity of all.
The Corn Laws protected the grain agriculture industry which benefitted farmers and wealthy landowners by keeping the price of British grain artificially high. Repealing these laws would benefit not only the merchants seeking to open up trade and widen their markets, but also the general population (especially the working class) as it would lower the cost of basic food staples like bread.
