Darwin learned from Thomas Malthus that overpopulation leads to a shortage of resources. Malthus noticed that plants and animals tend to over-reproduce, which can also be applied to humans. Thus, Darwin came up with the idea that those individuals that were able to get enough resources could survive and possibly reproduce compared to those that were not able to get the proper resources and died.
