After World War II, Berlin was divided between East and West Germany. The communist government of East Germany built the Berlin Wall in 1961, at the suggestion of the leader of the Soviet Union, in order to stop the migration of people from East to West Germany. Thus, during the Cold War, until 1989, the Berlin Wall was a physical and psychological barrier between East and West.
