Fascism and Nazism have in common a certain romanticism. National identity is built around legends and myths of the past that showed past greatness. Hitler wanted to link his reich with the "glory" of the past as if it was a necessary continuation of German greatness. Af we have seen, this is a stretch as Germany wasn't even a country before 1871. By glorifiying myths, Nazi's tried to create a culture of strength and racial superiority. Their feud with modern art was Hitler's claim that it was tainted by Jewish influence.
