Why do psychoanalysts use free association and dream therapy?
Solution
VerifiedFree association is a method of exploring unconscious thoughts, memories, and feelings by freely sharing random thoughts. A person in therapy is encouraged to verbalize or write all thoughts that come to mind. Free association reveals connections that might otherwise go uncovered. Individuals in therapy may reveal repressed memories and emotions. The investigation of repressed feelings from our dreams is dream analysis. Freud believed that analyzing dreams provided the easiest way to understanding the unconscious activities of the mind. According to Freud, dreams have been the main tool of self-analysis. Dreams provide an expression of desires, thoughts, wish fulfillment, and motivations. To understand the dream, the therapist had to explore the latent content of the dream using free associations.
