Horace Kallen contended in the early twentieth century that the idea of the "melting pot" did not and should not represent American cultural history. Kallen, on the other hand, argued for cultural awareness, in which diverse groups may preserve their cultural legacy while respecting the links and aspirations of everyone else. Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first decades, this ideal has been put to the test, notably by organizations that desire to stay fundamentally distinct from the American population, such as the Amish.
