Nonmetals like oxygen is more electronegative than hyrogen, meaning they have more ability to pull the electrons toward itself in a covalent bond. With this, hydrogen tends to have a positive charge (+1), while nonmetals have a negative charge in a hydrogen-nonmetal bond.
