It is important that we have different thresholds for different stimuli, because each threshold serves a specific function in our experience of sensation.

On one hand, we need absolute threshold\textbf{absolute threshold} so that we can detect (i.e hear, smell, see,..etc.) what’s going on in our environment, but without being overloaded with a lot of sensory information in your environment that you don’t actually need.

For example, you need the absolute threshold of your hearing to be low enough so that you can hear if someone is calling your name in the hall or if someone is screaming for help. However, you don’t want it to be too low that you can hear your neighbours arguing five blocks away from your home, or constantly hear your food being digested in your stomach.
