The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves from the atmosphere to lining organisms through photosynthesis and then up the food chain. At the top of the food chain, the organisms decompose and the carbon is released into the ground or back into the air. This all happens on Earth, and since the carbon never leaves the Earth, we can think of the carbon cycle as a closed system, even tough it is a system that includes the whole planet.
