The position of Southeast Asia is between two great powers, India and China, which is why this region has become a shatter belt. Colonial conquests brought Southeast Asia into a position between European powers. That is why the shatter belt at the same time had the role of a neutral territory that reduced conflicts between different nations, ie the buffer zone.
