If an ionic compound consists of two elements, we follow several rules for naming it:

  1. The name of the cation remains the same, and the suffix -ide or -ate is added to the name of the anion if it is a polyatomic molecule.

  2. The suffix onium is added to the polyatomic cation

  3. The number of hydrogen in an ion is denoted by the prefix mono-, di-, tri- depending on whether it is one, two or three.
