The printing press made it possible to copy and print books much faster, but also cheaper than before, so by the 1500s the printing press had published a huge number of books, as many as six million. Before the printing press existed, books could only be owned by some institutions, such as monasteries, cathedral chapters, or colleges, and the printing press made books available to all, leading to more and more people buying books.
