Japan's first outright act of aggression happened in 1931 when it seized Manchuria from China. The Japanese government believed it to be a necessity to establish an empire equal in power to the western ones, so expansion was one of the nation's main goals prior to the start of World War II. During its conquest of China that extended into the late 1930s, Japan ignored the international community and its appeals, withdrawing from the League of Nations.
