Church membership...
rose from 49% to 69%
Baby Boom
which peaked in the 1950's meaning around that time there were lots of newborn babies (because of the postponed marriages and engagements due the war)
The town of Holcombe and surrounding towns are...
completely Christian
Marriage between two different denominations (Nancy and Bobby) is seen as interfaith...
was unthinkable to Herb.
In Holcombe the church is something more than a part of the spiritual life...
but part of the social life
Clarence Ewalt who is a non-church goer still...
takes his daughter to the clutter house to attend church
The killing greatly affects the town to the point...
where they almost disregard their religions teachings of forgiveness
Howard Fox ('a brother of Bonnie Clutter') pleas for...
forgiveness as that is the Christian way and that killing the killers (Dick and Perry) will not bring the Clutters back but only kill more people. Of course the plea is ignored and Dick and Perry are hanged which is - according to Mr Fox - unchristian.
Willie Jay...
was assistant Chaplin at the prison where Perry was incrassated
Willie Jay wished...
to turn Perry to religion. If he had done so then perhaps the Clutters might not have been murdered.
The nuns at the orphanage beat Perry mercilessly...
this presents religion as negative and troublesome aspect of Perry's life.
Religion plays a part in Perry's dream...
there is religious symbolism with the idea of a serpent in the tree and the parrot he describes, 'taller than Jesus' implies that Perry's parrot angel/saviour is better than Jesus and Perry holds a resentment towards religion due tot he his orphanage experience
Dick attended church as a child although...
he does not believe in God.
The Clutters were a very religious family...
they always attended church to the point where their absence was alarming and cause for concern
Herb displays some religious intolerance...
Nancy and Bobby couldn't marry due to the difference in denomination. Herb does not drink or smoke, this is probably for religious reasons as the bible teaches to honour God with one's body
Bonnie Clutter is told that her mental problems are a result of a spinal problem and that surgery can cure her...
even so when we last see her she is going to bed with a bible and book mark that says "Take ye heed: watch and pray. For ye know not when the time is." on her bedside table. She clearly keeps her faith in God even in a time without much hope
Nancy is a member of the young Methodists league as well as many other responsibilities
this shows she is a devout and a 'good' Christian. She is more open minded towards other religions as she has a relationship with Bobby and their contrasting religions do not bother her.
Kenyon's religion is not as explored like the other members of the Clutter family ....
but he is also Christian as that's how he was raised to be God-fearing by Herb
