Motte and Bailey Castles

The keep was
the main defence building on top of the Motte. The Lord and his family would live here, and if the King was visiting, this was where he would also stay.
The Bailey was
a small village on the castle grounds where the soldiers lived and slept.
connected the bailey to the land surrounding the castle. It could be raised in the event of an attack.
The Motte was
the mound of earth (hill) the keep is built on.
The Palisade was
the high wooden fence surrounding the Bailey.
This surrounded the entire Motte and Bailey castle and was sometimes filled with water
The wooden bridge
connected the keep to the Bailey. In the event of an attack, this could be smashed and the defenders could retreat to the Bailey.
However, there were some issues with the Motte and Bailey Castle.
As the majority of the Motte and Bailey Castle was made out of wood, this made they could burn easily or rot.
There were some benefits to Motte and Bailey Castle's as
they could be built quickly, some were built in ten days.
William Duke of Normandy had
a portable Motte and Bailey castle which he brought with him to Pevensey when he landed.
The height of the Motte meant
it was difficult to attack the Motte and Bailey without being spotted. This also meant it was easier to defend due to the height advantage.
