Sperry Number of Ps
11 epilepsy sufferers who had undergone hemisphere disconnection surgery
Sperry Aim
To test the effect of hemisphere disconnection in humans. To understand the extent to which the hemispheres would usually connect.
Type of experiment used in SPERRY
Quasi / natural
DV in SPERRY
Ability to perform a variety of visual and tactile tasks.
Visual information test in SPERRY
Information is presented quickly on a screen either side of a central point which pps are looking at. Information presented to RVF is processed in the left hemisphere and information presented to LVF is processed in the right hemisphere.
Tactile information test in SPERRY
Objects were placed in either the pp's right or left hand. Objects held by the left hand were processed by the right visual field and vise versa.
First finding from visual test SPERRY
Information was only recognised as having been seen before if it was presented to the same field twice.
Second finding from visual test SPERRY
Information presented to the RVF could be described in speech and writing however information presented to the LVF couldn't.
Third finding from visual test SPERRY
If different information was shown to each visual field at the same time, the pp could draw what they saw in the LVF but could only say what they saw in the RVF.
First finding from tactile test SPERRY
Objects placed in the right hand could be described in speech and writing whereas objects placed in the left hand could not be.
Second finding from tactile test SPERRY
Objects could only be recognised as having been felt before if it was presented to the same hand again.
SPERRY conclusion 1
Split brain patients have a lack of cross integration whereby each hemisphere doesn't know what the other has previously done.
SPERRY conclusion 2
Split brain patients have two separate streams of consciousness.
CASEY # of Ps
117 from the original cohort of 562
CASEY Aim
To investigate the extent to which the ability to resist temptation at a preschool age affected the same pps in adulthood.
CASEY experiment 1 # of Ps
32 high delayers (12 male 20 female) and 27 low delayers (11 male 16 female)
type of experiment used in CASEY
quasi / natural
IV in CASEY
High or low delayer
DV in CASEY
Performance in impulse control task
