Terms in this set (37)
The SHAPE of a sound in relation to time and volume. Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release.
Similar to a rooms acoustic.
This is where the threshold level has been passed. In digital recording, any signal above 0db will cause clipping. It can be a severe and potentially damaging form of distortion that happens when a signal is too high for the piece of equipment being fed into.
CUT OFF FREQUENCY
The frequency above or below which attenuation begins in any filter.
Recorded natural sounds which are transformed using editing techniques such as cutting and reassembling, playing backwards, slowing down and speeding up.
The conversion of a larger file such as a wav audio file in to an mp3 file, allowing greater capacity for number of files to be stored. Compressing an audio file does, however, cause loss in audio quality.
These can be produced on a stringed instrument by lightly touching the string at a certain place, creating an in between sound.
HIGH PASS FILTER
A device which allows higher frequencies to be transmitted, sometimes used in graphic eqs. If you has a bass drum mic's, you would not get any low end thump.
Impedance is the amount of resistance tot he current flowing through an electronic device. It is measured in ohms.
A mixing desk connection that takes the signal from an input and sends it to an external processor before being returned to the rest of the mixer channel. Inset points are used predominantly for patching in dynamic processors.
Music initially made and released independently from a major record label. 1990's bands such as Oasis, Blur and Pulp.
Distance between two notes.
IRREGULAR TIME SIGNATURES
Used primarily in 20th Century music for example 5/8 or 7/8 which creates rhythmic interest.
Sub genre of jazz music. Its main features include strong rhythmic grooves and also a move towards using more amplified instruments and synthesisers
LOW PASS FILTER
A device wich allows lower frequencies to be transmitted. May subwoofers have low pass filters built in meaning only the low end, kick drum and low bass instruments come out the speaker.
can be used to create vibrato effects using MIDI. It can also control the tremolo sound on a hammond organ plug in or the attack and swell of a MIDI string instrument.
Bands from the late 1970s and early 1980s who followed on from the punk genre. Driven by heavy guitars to incorporating synths. Bands like Blondie and Talking heads
A variable values that affects an aspect of a devices performance or programming
An effect whereby the original signal is delayed and then played
a notated phrase mark is similar to a slur
a MIDI control which allows the use to slide between notes or bend notes
is an Aux send. The more fade level and less aux send will make the sound closer, while less fader level more aux send makes ti sound further away. This gives the mix engineer control over the front to back dimension of the music.
The term Q is often used interchangeably with bandwidth, but Q determines the bandwidth. The higher the value of Q, the more specific the frequency range you are affecting and vice versa.
Originated in Jamaica in the late 1960's. The bass guitar often plays the dominant role. The bass sound is thick and heavy and equalized so the upper frequencies are removed and the lower frequencies emphasised. Recognisable for oof beat rhythms, staccato chords played by a guitar or piano.
Change of key with the same keysignature
Programmes such as Audacity Protools etc allows you to edit a wave file
The speed at which an A/D converter takes snapshots of the incoming signal. CD's typically feature a sample rate of 44,100.
EQ filter that either boosts or attenuates constantly beow or above a set frequency. On a graph the EQ looks like a shelf rather than a bell shaped curve.
Popular throughout 1960'S. Its a combination of Gospel, blues and country music and its gritty sound reflected what was happening socially in America at that time.
dots above notes that tell performer to play short and detached
Control on various dynamics processors that determines the point at which the process is applied to the signal. For example a noise gate, the threshold is the point at which the gate opens and lets the signal pass. Signals that do not reach the threshold remain unaffected.
The variation between different time signatures within a piece of music.
Its cirrects the length of audio material either in a track or part of a track through shortening or lengthening the audio recording. This can be used to correct timing problems within a track or create very interesting effects and textures.
An electronic effects in guitar amplifiers and effects pedals which rapidly turn the volume of signal up and down creating a shuddering effect.
A form of sample where one sound can be used to activate another. This has practical applications in the studio for example when recording a drumkit that may have bled between microphones. The individual hits could trigger other sampled or midi drums
A midi parameter which registers the force in which a MIDI input device such a s a keyboard plays a note.
