Power of the druids
Terms in this set (15)
Druides rebus divinis intersunt, sacrificia publica ac privata procurant, religiones interpretantur:
The Druids are concerned with divine matters, they look after public and private sacrifices, and they explain religious questions.
ad hos magnus numerus adulescentium discendi causa concurrit,
A large number of young men flock to them to learn
magnoque hi sunt apud eos honore.
and they are held in great honour by them.
nam fere de omnibus controversiis publicis privatisque constituunt
For they decide on almost all public and private disputes
et, si quod facinus admissum est
and, if any crime has been committed,
if murder has been done, if there is a dispute about an inheritance, [or] about boundaries, the Druids settle the matter, and they decide the rewards and punishments.
If anyone, either in public or in private, has not stood by their decision
sacrificiis interdicunt: haec poena apud eos est gravissima.
they ban them from sacrifices: this punishment is the most serious among them.
ei quibus ita interdictum est numero impiorum ac scelestorum habentur;
Those who had been banned in this way were considered to be on par with impious and wicked men;
eis omnes decedunt, aditum sermonemque fugiunt, ne quid ex contagione incommodi accipiant;
everybody avoids them, they flee their approach and conversation in case they receive any harm from the contact
neque eis petentibus ius redditur neque honos ullus datur.
Neither is justice restored to those who ask for it, nor is any kind of honour given to them.
But over all these one Druid presides, who has the highest authority among them.
When this man dies, either the one who stanfs out from the rest in dignity succeeds him, or, if there are many on an equal footing, they compete for leadership by a vote of the druids, and sometimes even by fighting
Their rule of life is thought to have been invented in Britain and from there to have been transferred to Gaul,
et nunc ei, qui diligentius eam rem cognoscere volunt, plerumque in Britanniam discendi causa proficiscuntur
and now those who wish to learn more carefully this whole business, for the most part, set off for britain in order to learn.
