A man watching young mothers at a park in Hull and noticing they appear to be disconnected to their true selves. They have become domesticated to the point they have lost their spark in life, and it seems to be generational.
WHAT IS THE POEM ABOUT?
'Summer is fading: the leaves fall in ones and twos' - summer = happiness - it's being lost, and slowly
How does the poem begin, and what is the metaphor?
Light is disappearing. (remember it is in Hull in northeast England).
How is the title a metaphor for unhappiness?
Assemble has a cold robotic feel to it. Emphasises distance in relationship.
How does the quote 'young mothers assemble' reinforce the idea of domesticity ?
It represents the idea that the ideal of the wedding day has been forgotten and taken over by TV and laziness.
How is the wedding book lying on the table symbolic?
It could be that the mnothers are having to wear more makeup to maintain their beauty. Or it could be that they have hardened to teh society around them.
Explain the quote: 'Their beauty has thickened.'
'To the side of their own lives' - - it suggests that the mothers have forgotten their real selves and have become domesticated. It's a warning to the reader.
