Sheila birling analysis
Terms in this set (5)
"(urgently cutting in) Mother , dont - please dont"
The use of stage directions suggest sheila is hesitant to stop her mother making the same terrible mistake she did .sheilas tone of voice creates tension on stage which is highlighted by the use of repetition of the imperative "dont" Interrupting and calling sybil her "mother" also causes serious mood .Furthermore the use of hyphen emphasises the fact that sheilas is stressed and in pressure .
"And i know I'm to blame - and i'm desperately sorry -but i cant believe - i wont believe..."
Her guilt is still juxtaposed with a refusal to take ultimate responsibility but the use of dashes indicate that her speech sounds uncertain as if struggling with her conscience
"I've been so happy tonight .oh i wish you hadn't told me"
When she first hears the news she is sympathetic but she is more concerned about how it makes her feel sad .This could suggest sheila as selfish as she is self - centered which then contradicts her role in the play represented by stage directions "(very pleased with life and rather excited)"
"Mummy " and "Daddy"
she still refers to her parents as "Mummy " and "Daddy" which highlights her childishness
.This could emphasize how young girls like Sheila were childish as they had no concern for the poor they were unaware of their suffering since there were higher class
