Thesis Statement
S uses Appearance vs Reality to show that nothing is as it seems - hidden behind a cloak - main characters hide true natures, perhaps there is something deeper than what you see
Plan
1) M (vs B)
2)LM
3)Witches + Supernatural
4)Guilt as blood
Castle appearence : "delicate" air + is "loved"
Ironic as in reality it is a setting for Murder - foul
1)D asks M with "Thane of Cawdor?"
Ironic he commits treason
Execution allows D to say he will no longer deceive him - dramatic irony as audience are aware new TOC is plotting to kill him - M appears respectful, noble, brave
1)"Twice done then done double"
Two faced - reflects Macbeth + Lady Macbeth
1)"Valiant" "noble" "worthy gentleman" - D "For brave M well he deserves that name" - Captain describing him in battle
First + foremost a warrior - courage is his defining quality - initially portrayed as brave - ironic D speaks highly of him
1)1) "Noble B" 2) "restrain in me the cursed thoughts"
1) Suggests generosity of spirit, compassion + warmth Kd honours + appreciates B's qualities + respects him greatly
2) Values his loyalty - especially to KD - man who sticks to morals + refuses to let a prophecy disrupt connections with that
Actually good as hes presented same a + r
2)"Our honoured hostess". "Fair and noble hostess". - D
D trusts Lady M as the gracious wife of one of his lords. Repetition of hostess emphasizes how inhospitable her actions will be. She breaks his trust as D is unaware of what she is going to do
2)"Bring forth men - children only ! / for thy undaunted mettle should not compose / nothing but males" - M
M complements her saying it compliments her like she is a man (men are traditionally seen as powerful)
There is nothing soft or feminine about her. It is not like a stereo typical Jacobean women - weak. Lady M is strong and powerful.
MAYBE
2)LM
Maybe not primarily the avatar of evil but the incarnation of gender troubles - whose efforts to implement hr dreams question the sexual hierarchy to which she was born
3)Supernatural = extended metaphor for the character's mental disturbances / disorientation :
- W = personified as the evil part of our subconscious
- LM sleepwalking + M's vision of the dagger "is that a dagger i see before me, the handle towards my hand" - disturbance of mind or ghostly apparition drawing him to action
- B's ghost - real or manifestation of M's inner guilt/paranoia?
3)Perhaps M is not so evil - just psychologically messed up = more modern view
People generally believed in witchcraft - including King James I - deemed it a capital offence to be a witch = enemies to society, 2 views :
Witches are real - matches S's conceptions
Supernatural isn't real - psychological purely
3)W symbolize evil but man is free to resist it
Information is morally neutral until humans interpret it
M - tragic - depends on W's info
3)W appear to be the cause of evil -Embody demonic intelligences
but : don't directly make people commit crimes - provide info that leads to dramatic events - predicted by them
3)Blood -
to M + LM it appears to be there but in reality it isn't
-LM: Act 5: "Out damned spot, out I say" "what will these hands ne'er be clean"
-Subconscious hand scrubbing - outward manifestation of her inner guilt n- written in prose = mental disorientation - deeply ironic - no blood on her hands but figuratively it is destroying her
-M :"Will all great Neptune's ocean, wash this blood clean from my hands"
-Can't take back his actions- drowned in guilt
