Dissolution of the Monasteries was a cause of poverty in the 1500's, why?
Monasteries served a vital function in helping poor people providing food, clothes and money. Henry VIII closed monasteries between 1536 and 1540 which meant charity relief was no longer available. Monks, servants and labourers who worked in the industry became unemployed - forced to drift to towns in search of new work.
Bad harvests was a cause of poverty in the 1500's, why?
Several bad harvests resulted in food shortages and higher prices. The badly hit years were 1556, 1596 and 1597 - brought a threat of starvation to the poorest people.
Changes in Farming methods was a cause of poverty in the 1500's, why?
Farmers switched from growing crops to farming sheep as it was more profitable. As they enclosed fields with hedges, this often included the common land where labourers grazed their animals and grew crops. Sheep farming was less labour intensive many farm workers lost their jobs and went to towns in search of work. (This was a reason behind Kett's rebellion in 1549)

The continual rise in prices caused many landlords to increase rents. Many of the poorest tenant farmers were unable to pay the higher rents and were evicted from their farms, they drifted to the towns in search of work - unable to find any.

In 1500's population was 2.9 million and rose to 4.3 million by 1600 this caused a demand for food, clothes, housing and jobs. When supply could not meet the demand more people were classed as poor.

Woollen cloth was the countries main export this successful industry generated plenty of work for spinners and weavers. In the second half on the 16th century there was a collapse in cloth trade and exports fell sharply - increased unemployment.

During 1540's Henry VIII was at war with France and Scotland. During the 1590's Elizabeth I was at war with Spain. The cost of fighting led to higher taxes, and Henry was forced to lower the value of the coinage by using inferior metals to mint coins. When wars were over soldiers and sailors were left without jobs many wandered countryside in search of work in gangs.
