THE NERVOUS SYSTEM (Biopsychology)
Terms in this set (9)
What are the two functions of the nervous system?
-To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
-To co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
What are the two sub-systems of the nervous system?
-Central Nervous System (CNS)
-Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What is the CNS?
-It consists of the brain & the spinal cord
-It is the origin of all complex commands and decisions
What is the role of the brain in the CNS?
-The brain in the centre of all conscious awareness, receiving & sending out messages to the body
What is the role of the spinal cord in the CNS?
-The spinal cord carries signals back and forth between the brain and the peripheral nerves.
What is the PNS?
-It transmits messages via millions of neurones, to and from the central nervous system
-It is further divided into the autonomic nervous system (ANS) & the somatic nervous system (SNS)
What is the role of the ANS? (Part of the PNS)
-It transmits information to and from internal bodily organs
-It governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal & stress response
What is the role of the SNS? (Part of the PNS)
-It transmits information from receptor cells to the CNS
-It controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS?
-The parasympathetic nervous system controls homeostasis and the body at rest & is responsible for the body's "rest and digest" function.
-The sympathetic nervous system controls the body's responses to a perceived threat & is responsible for the "fight or flight" response.
