Chemistry - Unit 1
Terms in this set (27)
one type of atom, on its own or joined to another atom of the same type.
different types of atoms joined by a chemical bond
different types of atoms or compounds that can be physically separated. No chemical bond
give 5 types of separating mixtures
what charge is an electron ?
What charge is a proton?
What charge does a neutron have?
in an element what does the top number represent?
the mass number
what is the mass number?
the number of protons and neutrons added together.
in an element what does the bottom number represent
the atomic number
what is the atomic number ?
the number of protons and the number of electrons.
what is the typical atom radius approximately ?
what is the typical radius of a nucleus approximately ?
same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons.
what shell do electrons fill up from ?
the inner one
what is the max. amount of electrons on the 1st shell ?
what is the max. amount of electrons on the 2nd shell?
what is the max. amount of electrons on the 3rd shell ?
the number of electrons in the outer shell
the total number of shells
if the atomic structure was 2,8,5 what can we take from this ?
- it has 3 shells so it is in period 3 and the last number is 5 meaning it is in group 5
Characteristics of Group 1
Less dense that water so they float
They are soft to cut
They are an alkali metal
Have similar properties as they have 1 electron on their outer shell
React with oxygen to form oxides
React vigorously with water to make an alkaline (purple) solution and hydrogen and gas
Why does the reactivity INCREASES as you go DOWN the group?
-The outer shell electron gets further
-From the positive attraction of the nucleus
-So it is more easily lost.
Characteristics of Group 0 (8)
They are all gases
They all exist as a single atom
Boiling points increase as you go down the group as smaller atoms can move more easily
They are all unreactive = have full shells
They don't make compounds as they are stable
They are also know as the Noble gases or Group 8
Characteristics of Group 7
Known as the Halogens
They have similar properties as they all have 7 electrons in their outer shell
They are diatomic - exists in 2s e.g H2
They react vigorously with metals to produce salts
They react with non metals to make gases or liquids such as acids
They can be in displacement reactions
The reactivity DECREASES as you go DOWN the group
Give 5 characteristics of metals
high melting point
good electrical conductivity
Give 5 characteristics of non-metals
low melting point
no/poor thermal conductivity
non-conductors of electricity
