Who were the Anglo-Saxons?
A people who inhabited Great Britain from the 5th Century AD. They were from Germanic tribes which migrated to the island from continental Europe.
What was the Witan?
The Witan was the council of the Anglo Saxon Kings. Its job was to advise the King when he sought its advice. The King chose the people to be part of the Witan. These were usually the most powerful nobles and senior churchmen such as Bishops.
