Some key terms and definitions for key concepts in the Urban Challenges section of Unit 2.

A city with a population over 10 million e.g. Lagos, New York City
The growth in population where birth rate is greater than death rate.
The movement of people between the countryside and the city
The increase in the number of people living in towns and cities
Social opportunities / challenges
To do with people and living standards - including health care, education, cultural mix, recreation etc.
Economic opportunities / challenges
To do with money / job opportunities etc.
Environmental opportunities / challenges
To with the environment - e.g. air pollution, aesthetic of an area; habitats, urban greening etc.
As used in Makoko (Shanty town in Lagos) - shared facilities providing a place for people to gather and learn (improve education).
People moving within a country. For example - moving to London from elsewhere within the UK for employment or education.
People moving from one country to another. (e.g. people moving from the USA to the UK (one third of London's population are from international migration.
The age and sex of a population
Outward growth of a city into the surrounding rural area.
Area around an urban area trying to prevent urban sprawl
The revival of an old area by renewal (installing modern facilities in old buildings) or redevelopment (demolishing and starting anew)
One that can meet its needs now without making it difficult for future generations to meet their needs
