Carrots flyaway . Carrot fly resistant.
In situ drills 15cm apart. 1cm deep in Apr- June. To reduce the fly sow from mid May. Thin to 4-6cm. Careful - to not bruise foliage which attracts the fly. Can cloche for early crop in June. Even earlier could sow in autumn and cloche overwinter. 75 days to maturity. Benefit from being down in squares and vertical netted to 60cm around the edge.
Pest carrot fly: larvae tunnel into roots and carrots go brown and rot. Disease resistant cultivar. Sow late. Net.
Disease: powdery mildew. Like Downey mildew in look. Lack of water. Improve irrigation from below. Burn affected.
Courgette Supremo small compact and can be grown in pots
Plant one seed per pot inside 3rd week in April. Can cover with a bag/propogator. One month later transfer outside. 90cm apart. Harvest 8 wks after planting. Early July to Oct I'd keep picking. Pest: slugs. Disease: damping off.

Plant jan/feb indoors; or Feb/mar outdoors in drills 1-2cm deep and 30cm apart. Think to 10cm. Can be planted in August and overwintered - v early crop. Sets - plant mid Febto mid apr. 10cm apart one drills 30cm apart with nose showing. 25 wks to harvest spring sown, 45 winter down. Lift up to 2 wks after foliage wilts over. Hang & dry. Slice & freeze. Pest: onion root fly. Fly hatches early summer and attacks roots - plant dies. A 2nd generation can eat sweeping bulbs. Nemasys 2 wkly in growing season. Disease: white rot - fungal. Leaves go yellow & wilt. Bulb gets white mould with black spots. No cure. Destroy. Rotate as it can live in the ground for 10 yrs.
Leek Oarsman mid season with long white stems
Sow in Mar/apr in a seed bed 2cm deep. Thin to 3cm Or under glass in Feb and transplant in May. Transplant at 20cm high June/July trim and put in hole 15cm deep. As it grows draw soil up to to keep stem white. Harvest from Oct. can cope with frost. Pest as onions / slug. Disease: as onions Downy mildew - yellow leaves, white mould underside. Thin more Burn.
Beetroot Boltardy sweet round bolt resistant so can be sown early
Apr in drills 2cm deep 30cm apart. Thin to 10cm. Can get early crop from modules inside or o/s under cloches in Mar. Quick - 12 wks so. Can be a catch crop. Harvest from June.. Lift to store in Oct. as carrots and onions. Will last to March. Disease. Powdery mildew. Pests: carrot fly / aphids
Potato Desiree red skinned, yellow flesh, main crop. Drought and disease resistant. Successional : early Aaron pilot; main Desiree, 2nd/late Charlotte
Plant certified chitter stem tubers (seed pots) with chits 2-3cm (6 wks) in April. Like soil with some org matter, but not too fertile and no lime ph5-6 pref. 15 cm deep 40cm apart and 50cm bet rows. 20 wks to harvest in aug. Pile up earth around haulms to stop greening. Water well. A N feed will help during devt. Store over winter till March. Pest: potato cyst eelworm. Disease: blight: dark brown blotches on leaves in humid conduits in aug. Fungus causes all leaves to die. Get rid of old volunteer pots; spray with copper oxychloride; certified pots. Pest: potato cyst eelworm - larvae burrow into pots, brown rot. No cure.
Radish Rudolph crisp and tasty.
1cm deep. 15cm apart drills every two weeks from mar. Thin to 2.5cm apart. Good as catch crop, inter crop or row markers. Pests: slugs/snails disease: downy mildew- yellow leaves; Downy fungus underneath; leaves distort & wilt; destroy; inc air circ and reduce spacing
Lettuce Little Gem cos. Quick to grow. Good flavour. Catch crop. Not in same ground 2 yrs running.
Seed trays or modules Feb/mar. Or direct apr-June. 1cm deep thin seedlings transplant at 5-6 leaves 30cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Harvest June to sept if repeat planted 2wkly. Maturity 10 wks when there is a firm heart. Pest: slugs disease: grey mould
