Metabolic pathways; biology unit 1
Terms in this set (15)
Integrated and controlled pathways of enzyme catalysed reactions within a cell.
What is meant by metabolism?
Bring about the biosynthesis of complex molecules from simpler building blocks requiring energy.
Describe features of anabolic pathways?
Describe features of a catabolic pathway?
Brings about the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler building blocks releasing energy
Reversible and irreversible steps and alternative routes
What do anabolic and catabolic reactions have?
The presence or absence of particular enzymes and through the regulation rate of reaction of key enzymes within a pathway
What are metabolic pathways controlled by?
Genes for some enzymes are constantly expressed ,these enzymes are always present in the cell and their control involves the regulation of their rate of reaction
How are enzymes that are constantly produced controlled?
What are most metabolic reactions?
The presence of a substrate or the removal of a product
How do u drive a sequence of metabolic reactions in a particular direction?
Occurs when the active site changes shape to better fit the substrate after the substrate binds
What does induced fit mean?
To orientate reactants
To lower activation energy of the transition state
To release products with low affinity to the active site
What is the role of an enzymes active site?
The lowest volume of energy required to start a specific recation
What does activation energy mean?
Increasing substrate concentration increases the rate of enzyme reactions due to the substrate being more likely to bind to an enzyme (forward direction)
Increasing end product concentration causes a decrease in the rate of an enzyme as the enzyme is less likely to bind to a substrate ***
What are the effects of substrate and end product concentration on a metabolic pathway?
When a molecule with a similar molecular structure to the substrate bunds to the active site blocking it from the substrate therefore reducing the rate of reaction
Describe competitive inhibition?
When a molecule binds to a non-active site part of a enzyme changing the shape of the enzyme resulting in the active site being altered indirectly
Describe non-competitive inhibition?
When a build up of end product binds to a enzyme at the earlier stage of the pathway this slows down the conversion of a metabolite to another metabolite therefore regulating the pathway
Describe feedback inhibition?
