BIOLOGICAL APPROACH TO EXPLAINING OCD (NEURAL EXPLANATIONS)
Terms in this set (6)
what is a neural explanation?
genes associated with OCD are likely to affect levels of key neurotransmitters as well as structures of the brain.
ROLE OF SEROTONIN
Neurotransmitters are responsible for relaying information from one neuron to another. if someone has low levels of serotonin- then normal transmission of mood-relevant info does not take place and person experiences low mood.
some cases of OCD may be explained by a reduction in functioning in the serotonin system in the brain
DECISION MAKING SYSTEMS
in some cases of ocd, particularly Hoarding Disorder, are associated with impaired decision making.
associated with abnormal functioning of lateral parts of frontal lobe.
frontal lobe- responsible for decision making and logical thinking
left parahippocampal gyrus- responsible for processing unpleasant emotions
these function abnormally for people with OCD
EVALUATION: Research support
antidepressants (work purely on serotonin) help reduce ODC symptoms, suggests serotonin is involved in OCD.
Nedstadt et al- OCD symptoms form part of conditions that have a biological origin, such as Parkinson's. If a biological disorder produces OCD symptoms, then we assume it has a biological background.
shows biological factors play role in OCD
EVALUATION: No unique neural system
serotonin- OCD link isn't unique to OCD. many people with OCD experience depression. having 2 disorders together is called co-morbidity. This depression involves disruption to serotonin.
this means serotonin levels are disrupted in many people with OCD because they are depressed as well.
this means that serotonin may not be relevant to OCD symptoms
EVALUATION: correlation + causality
evidence to show neural systems (serotonin etc) don't work normally in brain of someone who has OCD.
biological model of mental disorder this is easiest explained by brain dysfunctioning causing OCD.
This is simply a correlation between neural abnormality and OCD, and they do not indicate a casual relationship.
possible that OCD and depression causes abnormal brain function and not the other way round
