What is a common test of fine motor control?
Finger tapping
What is bradykinesia?
Slowness of initiation of voluntary movement with progressive reduction in speed and amplitude of repetitive actions
What are symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP)?
What is it commonly mistaken for?
- Symptoms: gait instability (falling backwards), rigidity
- Commonly mistaken for Parkinson's resulting is late diagnosis or misdiagnosis
Based on Ling et al.'s (2012) study, what are the differences between parkinson's disease (PD) and PSP in finger tapping?
- Amplitude:
- Speed
- Duration
- Amplitude: PD showed decrease in amplitude over the number of cycles, whilst PSP show increase in amplitude
- Speed: PD showed decrease in speed whilst PSP showed slight increase
- Duration: both PD and PSP remained constant
BUT PSP patients show an overall smaller speed, amplitude and duration compared to PD patients
Therefore, PSP shows hypokinesia (reduced movement) without decrements overtime, whilst PD patients show decreases over time
What are some tests to study gross motor control?
- Postural control
- Gait
What are the 6 tests in the Clinical Scoring UPDRS III?
1. Tremor
2. Upper limb: tap index finger on thumb 10 times as quickly and as big as possible
3. Balance: Pull test
4. Posture: observe posture after arising. from a chair, walking, and during pull test
5. Gait: walk 10m, turn around and return
6. Freezing
Based on Di Giulo et al.'s (2016) study, what did they show about patients with Parkinson's Disease on and off levodopa?
Researchers applied pull tests to healthy and PD patients to study postural instability
Compared to healthy controls, patients with PD showed:
- greater COM displacement (sway)
- lower reaction force
- lower force
- took more small steps, with COM in front of both heels (healthy controls took a single large step with COM between both heels)
- little to no difference between on and off levodopa
