There were clear expectations of middle class families in 1912. They were expected to know their role. There were defined gender roles. Men were expected to work to support their 'perfect' family and also to protect women especially their wives and daughters. Women were expected to marry into money and to plan parties, visit friends and they did ont do jobs like washing, cooking or cleaning. However this is all for middle and upper class families

The clear hierarchy is destroyed when the inspector enters. Without their parents influence Eric and Sheila can think for themselves. Sheila is unsure whether she will marry Gerald anymore despite her family wanting her too. Eric says that Birling is... for help.
