Physical vs Chemical change
Terms in this set (45)
Physical change 4
Baking a cake
Chemical change 2
New substance is produced
Chemical change 8
5 signs of a chemical reaction
1. color change 2. new odor 3. new substance 4. energy is removed or added 5. formation of a gas
Characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change. it can be observe without changing the matter's identity.
Characteristic of a substance that describes a substance's ability to participate in a chemical reaction
Reactivity with another substance
color, density, hardness
A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties. they are changes in the way the matter looks so it is changes in shape, size, or appearance of matter. DOES NOT PRODUCE A NEW SUBSTANCE
A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties. so matter changes into a different kind of matter. DOES PRODUCE A NEW SUBSTANCE.
Iron nail rusting
Chemical change 4
Ice cream melting
Silver is a good conductor of electricity
A reaction where heat is released.
A reaction where heat is absorbed.
law of Conservation of Mass ( matter)
Mass can not be created or destroyed during ordinary chemical or physical changes. it means that in a chemical reactants, the mass of the products is the same has the mass of the reactants. sometime it does not look like this ( burning a log). the burning log look smaller, but in the burning process carbone dioxide and water has been formed. if you had the mass of H2O and CO2 to the mass of the ashes, you will find the same mass as the beginning of the reaction.
A substance that is changed in a chemical reaction, especially substances that are present at the initiation of the reaction.
A substance resulting from a chemical reaction, the substance created at the end of the chemical reaction.
scrunch sheet of paper
physical change 2
cutting a piece of paper in triangle shape
physical change 1
melting point of water
0 degree celcius or 32 F
below, water freeze, above it melt.
boiling point of water
100 degree celcius or 212 F
how are physical and chemical changes similar?
changes happen around us every day. both of them are changes on matter.
physical change when liquid change into a gas
physical change when matter changes from s solid state to a liquid state.
production or absorbing of light or heat
chemical change 5
producing or absorbing sounds
bubbling or fizzing
chemical change 3
anything that has a mass and a volume
building blocks ( such as lego) that build the matter
2 or + atoms joined together chemically
how are physical and chemical changes different?
chemical change is a change of matter that products new substances. physical change is a the way the matter change. The physical change of the substance has the same properties.
how do you know that a chemical change has occured?
new substances (products) are made with new property and the substances are different from the initial one (reactants). you cannot get the old material easily
producing bubble of gaz
chemical change 7
new odor is produced
chemical change 6
a solid is form in a liquid ( formation of a precipitate
making sunny side up eggs from shell eggs
chemical change 1
making snowman with playdoh
physical change 3
a process when 2 or + reactants react together to form the process of making new substances called products. New chemicals are made with new physical and chemical properties
