algebraic strategy

area
Area is defined as the total space taken up by a flat (2-D) surface or shape of an object.
arithmetic strategy
Solving word problems by working backwards, using the basic calculations we make in everyday life: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
associative property
It doesn't matter how we group the numbers (i.e. which we calculate first), when we add or multiply 3 or more numbers
coefficient
The number next to a variable that says how many times to multiply Ex: 4x, 4 is the coefficient
commutative property
That the change in the order of two numbers in an addition or multiplication operation does not change the sum or the product.
constant
A value that does not change
common denominator
A shared multiple of the denominator of two or more factors Ex: ⅖ and ⅗ , 5 is the common denominator
distributive property
Multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately.
equation
A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent. Ex: x + 5 = 10
expand/ distribute
Expand is when we multiply to remove the ( ), using the distributive property. Ex) 2(x+8)= 2x+16
expression
A math sentence with no equal sign

The solution to an equation when any value for the variable makes the equation true

To decide and explain what the intended meaning of a number, variable, or equation, in terms of the word problem.

A value or values that make an equation or inequality true
substitute
To replace the variables in an algebraic expression with a particular number
